I Wish I Knew What She Knew

woman-1031508_1280There is one story in the bible that I have always struggled with, a story that has made me aware of my faults, and made me want a deeper understanding of God. That is the story of Hannah.

Hannah had a hard life, she was married to a man named Elkinah, but Elkinah had another wife as well, Peninnah.

That for one is something I couldn’t even begin to imagine, there is no way that I would want to share my husband with another woman. And then imagine what it would be like having to live with her, having to see her every single day! Continue reading

Holy Week Devotions: King of my Heart

The widow who gave everything she had, even though it looked like nothing.

The woman who gave lavishly, pouring perfume over Jesus’ feet

The sister who sat and listened, choosing the best thing, being close to Jesus.

They all saw who Jesus was and loved him, they wanted to give him their everything, to sacrifice for him. They would do anything to be near him, no matter what anyone else thought. He was the king of their hearts.

They didn’t give because of what others thought, in fact all these women were mocked for what they did give to him. But they all gave him the best they had: a mite, expensive perfume, their full attention. They loved Jesus, they gave him their whole heart, they chose the best thing.

So many things can take control of our heart. It can be so hard to give it to Jesus. But in giving our hearts to Jesus we become free. It seems alien to us, that giving away makes us free, but it does. When we give our hearts and our lives to Jesus, we no longer need to worry, he is in control, this is when we find a true peace. Once we have given our hearts we often find our hands holding onto other things far more loosely. When Jesus is truly king of our hearts we will never stop worshipping him, never stop giving to him. This kind of giving is different though the earthly kind, the more we give the more we seem to gain.

When we give him our time, even early in the morning, we feel more refreshed. When we give him our money, we find ourselves blessed and never with out. When we serve others we find we know him more.

Give Jesus your life, make him the king of your life and you will never look back. You will know more peace and joy and love and hope than you ever have.

I will offer up my life in spirit and truth
Pouring out the oil of love, as my worship to you
In surrender I must give my every part
Lord, receive this sacrifice of a broken heart

Jesus, what can I give, what can I bring
To so faithful a Friend, to so loving a King?
Savior, what can be said, what can be sung
As a praise of Your name for the things You have done?
Oh, my words could not tell, not even in part
Of the debt of love that is owed by this thankful heart

You deserve my every breath, for You’ve paid the great cost
Giving up your life to death, even death on the cross
You took all my shame away, there defeated my sin
Open up the gates of heaven and have beckoned me in
