Imagine a bowl of jewels. They are all precious, they sparkle in the light. Some are bigger and some are smaller. They are all different shapes and colours. Nothing about them is similar. And yet they are all just as precious.
I don’t know about you, but I often feel like a lump of coal in that bowl. Everyone else sparkles, but I’m just dull and dirty. Anyone who looks in the bowl would wonder why I was there.
Then the owner of the bowl takes you and throws you into the fire. “It’s what I deserve,” you think.. “After all I am a piece of coal, my only use is to be burnt.”
The fire is hot, you wouldn’t choose to be there, but it is beautiful and it is powerful. No matter how hard it is you begin to realise the owner had placed you into that fire for a greater reason. Slowly the fire recedes and you look down at yourself. No longer a piece of coal, but a unique sparkling jewel. Good enough for a king.
You know that without the fire you would never have become a jewel. But you also realise that the owner loved even before you became a jewel.
Before the fire he looked at you and saw the jewel you would become. You were precious in his sight even then, he could see beyond what you saw.
Don’t forget who you are now, you are a jewel. You belong in the kings crown. You are not a lump of coal anymore you are beautiful and you sparkle, don’t ever think that you don’t.
He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the LORD. (Malachi 3:3 NLT)
On that day the LORD their God will rescue his people, just as a shepherd rescues his sheep. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown. (Zechariah 9:16 NLT)
