Satan loves to lie to us, he does it all the time, and most of the time we’re not even aware of it. He might do it in little ways “Why do you think your good enough to do that? God, couldn’t use you.” Or maybe bigger things like “it doesn’t really matter if you sleep with your boyfriend.” Or “You’re a mistake.”
We hear these lies so often that we get used to them, and even begin to believe them. Sometimes we take them on board and start living out these lies. We believe so strongly that God could never use us that we don’t ever push ourselves. We become frightened and timid, afraid to do anything because we don’t really believe that God is powerful, that he’s got our backs and he loves us.
Really, there is only one way we can fight against these lies.
Before Jesus began his ministry he spent forty days in the desert fasting. When he was tired and hungry the devil came and tempted him, with his lies and confusion.
First of all he said to Jesus. “If you are the son of God, then turn these stones into bread.” Notice how sneaky the devil is. He knows that Jesus is hungry (the devil loves to attack us when we’re weak) so he tempts him to break his fast and put an end to his hunger. How is Jesus going to stand up to this attack?
With the best weapon he has: God’s word. He replies “man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
For the next attack the devil ups his game, these simple temptations aren’t going to work with Jesus, so he uses one of his favourite tricks: “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
In this he totally distorts the word of God to his purposes. These kind of attacks can be hard to overcome, I’m sure we’ve all experienced them. Lies like “But good wants you to be happy, and doing that would make you happy.” The only way to overcome this attack is by having a good understanding of scripture.
That’s how Jesus was able to overcome.”It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’
Satan doesn’t stop there though, this time he brings out the big guns: Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
This is a huge one. Satan’s lies make us think that we are going to get something out of them. he tells us sleeping around will make us happy and free, when instead it leaves us broken and in bondage. He tells us having lots of money will make us happy, when in fact it makes us terrified that we will lose it all. He tells us having a good job, having power will make us happy, when it doesn’t, it pulls us away from our families and friend leaving us isolated and lonely. The only way we can overcome this is with scripture.
That’s how Jesus overcame this one “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]”
Then Satan ran away and angels came and looked after jesus. When we are fighting satan’s lies we will not be left on our own either.
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
